Psychotherapy and Counselling Service
Why Estuary?
I chose estuary as the name for my psychology and counselling business because it links a familiar place with the way I think about my therapeutic practice. An estuary creates a unique eco-system, a place that allows plants and animals to thrive in changing conditions. It is a place of growth and a place of transition where river and sea meet.
Rest and Repair
Near this estuary, there is a marina, which is home to many different boats. It is a place where they can rest and repair before heading back out to sea. It is a place of light, space and air. A space to breathe, a place to reflect and recuperate. A place to heal.
Growth and change
Tidal ranges in estuaries impact their physical structure and change the shape of mudflats and saltmarshes. The tidal range in the Severn Estuary is the second highest in the world. Twice a day, it recedes and reveals what is beneath and then hides it again under many metres of water. There is a regular ebb and flow, a constant movement underpinning life. Environments matter. We find ways to deal with the effects of the environments we have had to negotiate over our lifetimes. Sometimes we need some support to help us grow and change with, and around, these experiences, whatever shape and form they take.
The importance of being listened to… and having a voice
Careful listening within a warm, supportive, respectful relationship can help us feel safe enough to reflect. I think that reflection can help us heal. Part of that process is about finding, and using, our voice.
